About Merrimack Valley

The Merrimack Valley is the economic and demographic center of New Hampshire, home to the state's two largest cities — Manchester and Nashua — and a constellation of thriving suburban communities. The Merrimack River, which flows south through the region before crossing into Massachusetts, powered the textile mills that built Manchester and Nashua into industrial powerhouses in the 19th century. Today those mill buildings have been transformed into lofts, offices, restaurants, and innovation hubs, and the region has reinvented itself as a technology, healthcare, and professional services economy.

Manchester, New Hampshire's largest city, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. The Millyard — once the largest textile manufacturing complex in the world — now houses the University of New Hampshire's Manchester campus, technology companies, biotech firms, and a growing startup ecosystem. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport provides direct flights to major hubs, making the city a genuine alternative to Boston for businesses and residents alike. The city's arts scene, anchored by the Currier Museum of Art, and its diverse restaurant offerings reflect a community that has embraced its urban character.

Nashua, consistently ranked among the best places to live in the United States, sits at the Massachusetts border and offers perhaps the most compelling value proposition in the region: easy access to Boston's job market, no state income or sales tax, and housing costs significantly below comparable Massachusetts communities. The city's economy is anchored by major employers in defense, technology, and healthcare, and its school system is among the strongest in the state. The downtown has seen significant investment in recent years, with new restaurants, breweries, and cultural venues drawing residents from across the region.

The suburban towns of the Merrimack Valley — Bedford, Londonderry, Derry, Merrimack, Amherst, and others — offer a range of housing options from starter homes to executive estates. These communities have grown rapidly as Massachusetts residents have discovered that crossing the border can mean significantly lower housing costs, no income tax, and access to excellent schools. The tradeoff is typically a longer commute, though the region's highway network — I-93, I-293, and Route 3 — provides reasonable access to Boston and Manchester.

Concord, the state capital, anchors the northern end of the Merrimack Valley and provides a different kind of community experience. Smaller and more politically oriented than Manchester or Nashua, Concord offers a walkable downtown, strong arts organizations, and the stability of state government employment. The city's Main Street has seen a revival of independent businesses, and its proximity to both the Lakes Region and the White Mountains makes it an attractive base for outdoor enthusiasts who also want urban amenities.
