Brookline is a small rural town in Hillsborough County near the Massachusetts border, southwest of Nashua. The town retains a strong agricultural character, with several working farms and orchards still active alongside newer residential subdivisions.

Brookline's town center includes a traditional common and a handful of civic buildings, while the surrounding countryside offers hiking and horseback riding on conservation land. The town's proximity to Nashua and the Massachusetts border makes it convenient for commuters despite its rural feel.

Housing in Brookline tends toward larger lots and a mix of older farmhouses and newer construction, drawing families who want rural space within commuting distance of Nashua. The town's lack of significant commercial development keeps most shopping trips centered on neighboring communities.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
