Overview

Loudon is a rural town in Merrimack County just northeast of Concord, best known as the home of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The speedway hosts NASCAR races and other motorsports events that draw large crowds several times a year.

Outside of race weekends, Loudon retains a quiet, rural character, with forested land, small farms, and the Soucook River running through town. The town's proximity to Concord provides access to government jobs and services without the density of the capital city itself.

Housing in Loudon remains relatively affordable, drawing families and commuters who want rural space near Concord. The speedway provides a modest boost to local businesses during major event weekends, though the town's economy is not dependent on it year-round.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
