About Lakes Region

The Lakes Region is the recreational heart of New Hampshire, a landscape defined by 273 lakes and ponds spread across rolling hills and forested shorelines. Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state at 72 square miles, anchors the region and draws visitors and residents alike with its crystal-clear waters, 274 islands, and 182 miles of shoreline. The region's towns — Laconia, Meredith, Wolfeboro, Gilford, and dozens of smaller communities — have built their identities around this extraordinary natural resource.

The economy blends year-round residential life with a robust tourism and hospitality sector. Summer brings boaters, swimmers, and vacationers; fall draws leaf-peepers and hikers; winter activates snowmobile trails and ice fishing. This seasonal rhythm creates a diverse job market in hospitality, retail, marine services, and construction, while a growing number of remote workers have made the region a permanent home, attracted by the scenery and quality of life.

Real estate in the Lakes Region spans a wide spectrum. Lakefront properties on Winnipesaukee command some of the highest prices in New Hampshire, with waterfront homes regularly selling for $1 million or more. But the region also offers excellent value in inland towns and on smaller lakes like Winnisquam, Ossipee, and Squam — the latter made famous as the filming location for "On Golden Pond." First-time buyers and families often find more accessible options in Laconia, Franklin, and Tilton.

The outdoor recreation opportunities are unmatched in the state. Beyond the lakes themselves, the region is home to Gunstock Mountain Resort for skiing and mountain biking, the Belknap Range for hiking, and hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails maintained by local clubs. The Lakes Region Conservation Trust protects thousands of acres of forests and wetlands, ensuring the landscape remains accessible and undeveloped for future generations.

Community life in the Lakes Region is anchored by Laconia, the region's largest city and county seat of Belknap County. Laconia hosts the famous Motorcycle Week each June — one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the world — and is undergoing a significant downtown revitalization. Smaller towns like Wolfeboro, which calls itself "the oldest summer resort in America," and Meredith, with its charming waterfront village, offer the quintessential New England small-town experience.
