Overview

Tamworth sits in the foothills of the White Mountains in Carroll County, near Mount Chocorua, one of the most photographed peaks in New England. The town includes several small villages, including Tamworth Village and Chocorua, each with its own historic character.

The Tamworth Distilling and the historic Barnstormers Theatre give the town a small but notable cultural presence, while the surrounding mountains and the Bearcamp River draw hikers and paddlers. Chocorua Lake offers one of the region's most scenic swimming spots.

Housing in Tamworth ranges from modest village homes to mountain-view properties, drawing artists, outdoor enthusiasts, and retirees. The town's small size and mountain scenery give it an outsized cultural reputation relative to its population.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
