About Monadnock Region

The Monadnock Region occupies the southwestern corner of New Hampshire, a landscape of rolling hills, working farms, covered bridges, and small mill towns centered on the iconic Mount Monadnock. At 3,165 feet, Monadnock is said to be the most climbed mountain in North America — its bare summit, scoured clean by a 19th-century fire, offers 360-degree views that stretch to Boston on clear days. The mountain gives the region its character: accessible, unpretentious, and deeply connected to the land.

Keene, the region's largest city and the seat of Cheshire County, is a classic New England college town anchored by Keene State College. Its Main Street — one of the widest in New England — hosts a thriving downtown with independent restaurants, galleries, and shops. The city has invested heavily in arts and culture, and its annual Pumpkin Festival (now relocated but still celebrated locally) drew national attention for decades. Keene's economy blends education, healthcare, manufacturing, and a growing creative sector.

The Monadnock Region has long attracted artists, writers, and those seeking a quieter alternative to more developed parts of New England. Towns like Peterborough — home to the MacDowell Colony, America's oldest artist residency — Dublin, Harrisville, and Jaffrey have maintained their historic character while welcoming new residents drawn by the scenery and community. The region's housing market offers some of the best value in southern New Hampshire, with historic homes, farmhouses, and village properties available at prices well below the Seacoast or Merrimack Valley.

Agriculture remains a visible and valued part of the regional economy. The Monadnock region has one of the highest concentrations of working farms in New Hampshire, including dairy operations, orchards, vegetable farms, and maple sugar producers. Farm stands, CSAs, and farmers markets are woven into the fabric of community life, and the region's food culture reflects a genuine farm-to-table ethos rooted in local production rather than trend.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the region offers far more than its namesake mountain. The Wapack Trail traverses the region's ridgeline from Watatic Mountain in Massachusetts to North Pack Monadnock in Greenfield. Pisgah State Park, at over 13,000 acres, is New Hampshire's largest state park and offers exceptional hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing. The Ashuelot River and its tributaries provide paddling opportunities, and the region's network of conservation lands continues to grow through the work of the Monadnock Conservancy.
