Overview

Walpole is a small Connecticut River Valley town in Cheshire County known for its well-preserved village green, ringed by Federal and Greek Revival architecture. The town's rural character and river valley farmland have changed little over the decades, giving it a postcard New England appearance.

Local agriculture supports a strong food and cider-making scene, including a well-known creamery and several area orchards. The town center includes a general store and library that anchor much of the community's civic life, supplemented by an active roster of volunteer organizations.

Walpole remains very rural, with minimal public services and a nearest hospital more than 20 minutes away. The town's limited employment base outside agriculture and small local businesses means many residents commute elsewhere, drawn instead by the privacy and close-knit community that rural Walpole offers.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
