Overview

Pittsburg is New Hampshire's largest town by land area, encompassing the Connecticut Lakes region at the state's northern tip near the Canadian border. The town's vast forests and lakes make it one of the most remote and wilderness-oriented communities in the Northeast.

The Connecticut Lakes offer some of the best fishing in New England, while extensive snowmobile and ATV trail networks draw visitors throughout the year. Pittsburg's small village center provides basic services for a sprawling, sparsely populated town.

Housing in Pittsburg includes a mix of year-round homes and remote camps, with prices reflecting the town's extreme remoteness. The town draws hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking true wilderness access.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
