About North Country

The Great North Woods is New Hampshire's final frontier — a vast, sparsely populated landscape of boreal forest, pristine rivers, and working timberlands that covers roughly a third of the state's land area but is home to less than 5% of its population. Coos County, which encompasses most of the region, is the largest county in New England by area and one of the least densely populated. Here, moose outnumber people in many townships, and the night sky is dark enough to see the Milky Way with the naked eye.

The region's economy has historically been built on timber, paper manufacturing, and agriculture. While the paper mills that once employed thousands have largely closed, the forest products industry remains important, and a new generation of sustainable forestry operations is finding ways to balance economic production with conservation. Tourism has grown significantly as outdoor enthusiasts have discovered the region's exceptional hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and paddling opportunities. The Connecticut Lakes, the headwaters of the Connecticut River, draw anglers from across the Northeast.

Lancaster, the county seat, and Berlin, the region's largest city, serve as the commercial and service centers for the surrounding communities. Berlin, once a thriving mill city, has faced significant economic challenges since the closure of its paper mills but is working to reinvent itself around outdoor recreation, renewable energy, and small-scale manufacturing. The city's Nansen Ski Jump, once the largest in the world, is being restored as a heritage attraction. Lancaster offers a classic New England downtown with independent businesses, a strong agricultural fair tradition, and a community that takes pride in its self-reliance.

The outdoor recreation opportunities in the Great North Woods are extraordinary and largely undiscovered by the broader public. The Connecticut River Headwaters region offers world-class trout fishing in remote, uncrowded waters. The Androscoggin River provides excellent whitewater kayaking and flatwater paddling. The region's snowmobile trail network — among the most extensive in the eastern United States — draws riders from across New England and beyond. Moose viewing is practically guaranteed along the "Moose Alley" stretch of Route 3 near Pittsburg.

For those seeking a genuine escape from suburban life, the Great North Woods offers something increasingly rare: space, quiet, and a community where neighbors still look out for each other. Housing is extraordinarily affordable by New Hampshire standards, with properties ranging from hunting camps to historic farmhouses available at prices that seem impossible compared to southern New Hampshire. The tradeoff is distance from major employment centers and services, but for remote workers, retirees, and those who prioritize the natural environment above all else, the Great North Woods represents an unmatched quality of life.
