Overview

Lisbon is a small mill town in Grafton County along the Ammonoosuc River, near Franconia Notch and the northern White Mountains. The town's compact downtown reflects a 19th-century manufacturing history similar to nearby Littleton.

The Ammonoosuc River runs through downtown Lisbon, and the town's proximity to Franconia and Cannon Mountain provides access to skiing and hiking. A modest commercial center serves the surrounding rural community.

Housing in Lisbon remains affordable relative to resort towns further into the mountains, drawing families and value-seekers who want White Mountains proximity at a lower cost.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
