Overview

Littleton is a mountain town in Grafton County along the Ammonoosuc River, serving as a commercial hub for the northern White Mountains region. Its Main Street runs directly along the riverbank, with a series of small bridges connecting downtown businesses to riverside parks.

Littleton's downtown has undergone a notable revitalization in recent decades, with independent bookstores, breweries, and restaurants filling storefronts that once stood vacant. The town's location makes it a convenient base for accessing the White Mountains, Franconia Notch, and the broader North Country.

Housing in Littleton remains more affordable than resort towns further into the mountains, drawing families, retirees, and outdoor enthusiasts. The town continues to balance its role as a working commercial center with growing interest from visitors and second-home buyers.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
