Overview

Somersworth is a small mill city on the Salmon Falls River in Strafford County, directly across the water from Berwick, Maine. Like many former textile centers along the river, the city's identity was shaped by its 19th-century mills, several of which still stand downtown.

Somersworth's compact downtown has seen steady reinvestment, with new restaurants and small businesses filling former mill and commercial buildings. The city sits close to Rochester and Dover, giving residents easy access to larger retail and job centers in the Seacoast region.

Housing in Somersworth remains among the more affordable options on the Seacoast, attracting a diverse mix of first-time buyers, families, and residents seeking proximity to both Maine and the coast. The city's population and job growth have picked up in recent years alongside downtown revitalization.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
