Overview

Deerfield is a rural town in Rockingham County known for hosting the Deerfield Fair, one of New Hampshire's oldest agricultural fairs, each autumn. The town's rolling farmland and forested hills have remained largely undeveloped compared to faster-growing communities nearby.

The Deerfield Fairgrounds anchor much of the town's civic identity, while the surrounding countryside offers hiking, hunting, and horseback riding. Deerfield has no significant commercial center, with most shopping trips made to Raymond or Epping.

Housing in Deerfield consists mostly of larger rural lots, drawing families and residents who want agricultural character and open space within a reasonable drive of southern New Hampshire's job centers. The town's strong fair tradition reflects its continued agricultural identity.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
