Overview

Brentwood is a rural town in Rockingham County just west of Exeter, characterized by farmland, forest, and a scattering of residential subdivisions. The town has no traditional village center, relying on nearby Exeter and Epping for shopping and services.

The Exeter River winds through Brentwood, offering fishing and paddling, while the town's rural roads and low density keep its character quieter than the busier Seacoast communities to the east. Brentwood also hosts the Rockingham County jail and several county government facilities.

Housing in Brentwood consists mostly of single-family homes on larger lots, drawing families and commuters who want rural space within a short drive of Exeter's amenities and the broader Seacoast job market.

Why "Effective Rate" is a better comparison

New Hampshire towns do not all assess property at the same percentage of market value. The state publishes an annual equalization ratio for every municipality showing how close local assessments are to full market value. A town that assesses homes at only 64% of market value will show an artificially high tax rate compared to a town that assesses at 100%. Multiplying the local rate by the equalization ratio produces an effective (equalized) rate that can be fairly compared across any two towns in the state.
