Understanding Crime Rates

How Are Crime Rates Calculated?

Crime rates are expressed as the number of reported crimes per 1,000 residents. This normalization allows fair comparison between towns of different sizes. A town with 100 crimes and 10,000 residents has a rate of 10 per 1,000, while a town with 50 crimes and 2,000 residents has a rate of 25 per 1,000.

Crime Categories

Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.Property crimes include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The total crime rate combines both categories. Use the controls above to switch between metrics.

Data Limitations

Crime reporting practices vary by municipality. Some smaller towns may be served by state police rather than local departments, which can affect reporting completeness. Not all NH towns report to the FBI UCR program. Towns without available data are shown in gray on the map. Use this data as one factor among many when evaluating community safety.

New Hampshire vs. National Crime Rates

New Hampshire consistently ranks as one of the safest states in the nation. Here's how NH compares to the U.S. average (2022 FBI data, per 1,000 residents):

Total Crime Rate
~12.5
NH Average
vs
~19.6
U.S. Average
36% lower than national average
Violent Crime Rate
~1.5
NH Average
vs
~3.8
U.S. Average
61% lower than national average
Property Crime Rate
~11.0
NH Average
vs
~15.8
U.S. Average
30% lower than national average

Why is NH so safe? New Hampshire's low crime rates are attributed to a combination of factors: strong community ties in small towns, high quality of life, effective local law enforcement, and one of the lowest poverty rates in the nation. NH has ranked as the #1 or #2 safest state in multiple national studies. Even the state's highest-crime towns often have rates below the national average.
