Living in Claremont

Claremont is a former mill city along the Sugar River in Sullivan County, near the Vermont border in the Connecticut River Valley. Its brick mill buildings and Victorian-era downtown reflect a 19th-century industrial boom built on textiles and machine tools. The city has worked for decades to revitalize its historic downtown, converting former mills into apartments, offices, and small businesses. The Sugar River and several waterfalls run through the city center, and Claremont Speedway and the Fiske Free Library anchor local community life. Claremont offers some of the most affordable housing in the Upper Valley region, drawing first-time buyers and remote workers. The city continues to work through the economic challenges common to former mill towns, including a smaller local job base than neighboring Lebanon.
